, former Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman expressed the Department’s
full support and announced the framework for implementation of a National
Animal Identification System (NAIS) designed to identify any agricultural
premise exposed to an animal disease so that it could be quickly contained and

CONTROL
OF EQUINE VIRAL ARTERITIS IN THE
U.S.
Equine
Viral Arteritis (EVA) is a contagious disease of horses caused by the equine
arteritis virus (EAV). The disease
does not usually kill healthy adult horses, but it can kill young foals and
cause pregnant mares to abort. In
stallions, the disease can result in the establishment of a carrier state
whereby they can continue to spread the virus. MORE

American horse industry is very concerned about introducing Equine
Piroplasmosis (EP) into the
U.S.
Regulations requiring the testing of all horses entering the
U.S.

The President's Budget was released in early March. The AHC’s main
concern is the 2006 Budget for the Department of Agriculture (USDA), in
particular the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the
Department’s research agencies:
the Agriculture Research Service (ARS) and the Cooperative State
