West Nile Virus Update-March 24, 2000

Washington, D.C.-West Nile Virus has caused significant concern in the horse industry and the fear and anticipation of its possible reappearance this spring has made many in the equine industry increasingly nervous. A number of activities to address various aspects of concern; i.e., research, movement, shows, etc. are being planned or are in process now. The AHC has established a WNV Working Group to provide some coordination of activities so that the industry can benefit as a whole. The Working Group will also identify key points of information that should be distributed so that information about this disease is factual. It is a disservice to all in the horse industry if unnecessary fear is created in order to get action or funding for individual needs.

Members of the Working Group include Dr. Peter Timoney, University of Kentucky; Mr. Clay Murray, AAEP; Dr. Ted Hill; NYRA, Ms. Kate Jackson, AHSA; Mr. Jim Wolf, USET and Ms. Pam Blatz-Murff, Breeder's Cup, Ltd.

The American Horse Council, the national legislative representative for the horse industry, works daily with Congress, federal agencies and the industry itself to create an environment that benefits horses and the people who depend on, care about and enjoy them. A non-profit organization, the AHC's activities are funded entirely through membership dues. The AHC represents all breeds, disciplines and activities as well as owners, breeders, veterinarians, farriers, competitors, trainers, jockeys, drivers, breed registries, horsemen's associations, race tracks, horse shows and rodeos, commercial suppliers and state horse councils.
